Install and onboarding
Ted Agent needs macOS 26 Tahoe or later. Everything he needs is bundled in the app; there is nothing else to install.
Getting it
Ted is in private beta. Once you have access, download the DMG, open it and drag Ted Agent to Applications. The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.
If you have an old TedAgent (without the space) in Applications, delete it.
Onboarding
The first launch walks you through it in ten short chapters, like episodes:
- The Pilot: this is the story of how you met your agent.
- Have You Met Ted?
- The Tricks: six things he can do, all real.
- The Herd: border collies herd; Ted herds agents.
- The Brains: pick how Ted thinks, the Claude CLI or an API key.
- The Number: pair WhatsApp by QR code, or skip it.
- The Name Tag: what Ted should call you.
- Robin's Beat: pick what the news bulletin covers.
- The Floor Plan: where everything is.
- The Finale: a few shortcuts, and a card about Cortex Shelf.
The daemon
Ted's work happens in a background process, the daemon, which the app starts and talks to on your Mac only. It keeps running when you close the window, so scheduled errands and incoming messages are handled. Its status is in the Engine room section of Settings: running or stopped, how long it has been awake, and its version.
Updates
Ted updates himself in the background. Ted Agent › Check for Updates… checks now. After an update, What's New tells you what changed, as an episode.
